We get this question fairly often. Below will be some additional information on differences. Hopefully this helps guide you to the right puppy for your lifestyle.
Yorkie- Poos & Malti- Poos:
All of our Yorkie- poos and Malti-poos will be around 3-7lbs full grown. More commonly around 5-5.5lbs. If I were to give a 1 to 10 scale, 1 being the most laid back and 10 being a very excitable puppy, I'd say they are a 6 or 7. These breeds are both very friendly and playful. Neither of them are yippy/ barky dogs. The reason I grouped them together in a category are because of the similarities they share. The main differences are that Malti- poos tend to be cream in color whereas Yorkie- poos are typically black and tan. These two breeds both share the rarer reddish/brown color and also the black and tan color. If I were to put a Yorkie- poo and Malti- poo side by side that were the same color, most wouldn't be able to tell the difference. These little guys are also non- shedding. Within the past 28 years of breeding, we've only had about 7 people who had allergies to our puppies and thats including our hybrid puppies. Those with allergies can also be allergic to many different aspects of dogs like saliva pH, cornfield layer of the skin "shedding," or hair. Majority of our Yorkie- poos and Yorkie- poos will have scissor bites. They also tend to be more "square." The hair will be wavy, not completely straight or super curly.
Shih- Poos & Peke- A- Poos:
Continuing on our previously mentioned scale of 1 to 10, I'd say both Shih- poos and Peke- A- poos are about a 3-5. They tend to be the most mellow of our breeds. They are still playful, however, not as energetic as the other breeds mentioned. These breeds love sitting on laps and LOVE treats. The puppies typically have mild underbites, a characteristic of both Shih- Tzus and Pekingnese. They are usually a bit longer in the back and have shorter legs than our other breeds. Their noses are also more pushed in. The main differences between the Shih- poos and Peke- A- poos are that Peke- A- poos usually have a shorter nose in comparison to Shih- poos. They will also have wavy hair. Our Shih- poos are usually 3-7lbs full grown and our Peke- A- poos vary between 3.5-10lbs.
Our poodles vary in energy level. Our red and white poodle bloodlines tend to be calmer compared to our chocolate or black bloodlines. All of our puppies are very smart, however, poodles would have to top the list. They are the second smartest breed of 189 recognized AKC breeds. They are athletic and love going for walks, on hikes, and playing in the yard. They're also super cuddly and enjoy being on your lap and getting attention. Poodles will have scissor bites and curlier hair. They will also be the tallest of our breeds.
We've had people ask why our poodle pups hair is fluffy and not tight and curly. As poodles age, their hair gets curlier. It also depends on how often you're brushing the hair. If the puppy was just bathed and blow dried, their hair will be fluffy. If the hair hasn't been brushed in awhile, they tend to be curlier. (Below is a pet adult teacup poodle of mine named Mabel.)
