Grooming |
"For a low-shedding breed, the Maltipoo requires a significant amount of coat maintenance. Not only do you need to brush his coat daily to prevent mats and tangles, but you should keep it trimmed as well so it doesn’t grow over your dog’s eyes or mat between his toes. Depending on breeding, your dog may also need to have his coat clipped every 4 to 6 weeks, just to keep it looking neat. You should also clip your dog’s nails twice a month, brush his teeth daily, and clean his ears once a week. When it comes to clipping your dog’s coat, you can learn how to do it yourself or you can take him to a professional groomer. If you want to show your dog, you may want to keep his coat long. If you plan to keep him primarily as a pet, however, you might consider a “pet clip” or a “puppy clip” that keeps the coat short all over the body." Pawster.com |
Exercise |
"Maltipoos are active little dogs. This breed loves to play and they’ll spend as much time with their family as they can. These dogs only require a moderate amount of daily exercise, however, and much of it can be met through active playtime." Pawster.com |
Question: What if I want a dark red Malti-poo puppy?
At Aria's friends, we're breeding F1 hybrids meaning we're breeding a purebred Maltese to a purebred Toy Poodle. Maltese come from a pure white bloodline so it is the poodle that will determine the coloring of the Malti- poos. With the pure white bloodline of the Maltese, it tends to wash out the coloring of the poodle. Generally, when breeding a white maltese female to a red toy poodle male, we get cream or apricot colored puppies.
We have a lot of people that will send pictures of what they want and often they are F1b hybrids (breeding a Malti- poo to a poodle) to gain the darker red color since you're diluting out the white color of the Maltese. We personally don't breed F1b hybrids because the puppies aren't consistent in looks. Some will take on more Maltese- like characteristics and others will look more poodle- ish. We love the consistency in looks of the F1 hybrids.
Also, do be careful when searching "red Malti- poos" online. We've noticed a lot of red Cavapoos will show up and people will think they are Malti- poos when they are not. On average, cavapoos will weigh up to 20 lbs whereas our Malti- poos only weigh 3- 7 lbs. We've also seen red F1b Malti-poos and they tend to be larger in size (around 10- 12 lbs full grown.)
